How could I forget?

In the "Patchwork and Performances" post I wrote about Zach's many contributions to the music evening.  How could I forget that he played the piano as well?!?!  Thanks to Steffi, who showed her support by coming to the performance, we have video footage.  Here is the link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYK0NxdGHTI&feature=g-upl

Patchwork and Performances

I've started working on a sofa throw for Steffi and Dietmar.  Steffi picked out the fabrics and the pattern.  I'm really enjoying the project - the colors are so bright and fresh, and I've learned some nifty techniques in sewing the blocks.

This was my first "step"; I followed the dimensions for the "lap" quilt, in order to get a sense of size for the throw.  I've since doubled the number of blocks, so right now the quilt is two rows longer and one row wider than what appears on this photo.

First performance last week - Romeo!!  Zach's Literature and Theater course at school presented the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet.  Zach acted in the traditional, Shakespeare version.  His classmates "adapted" the original to represent different time periods - cave-man style, Third Reich (Nazi officer and Jewess, Roman and Judith), and then modern, youth culture.

Here's the graduating class' "monument" in the school stairwell - depicting the class theme "Abi mit der Maus"

Second performance of last week - Zach's school music course.  He got to do it all - boomwhackers, oboe, sing, AND recorders!!  Friday was his last day of normal classes.  During this first week of Pentecost vacation he's in Stuttgart visiting his friends Daniel und Philipp; during the second week, he'll be in Vienna with his music course.

Yay!! I made it to the tunnel (and back)!

John supervised the next step in my re-entry into the world of bicycling.

Today our goal was to reach the end of our running path (and to return).

Curves are scary!

Other people and bicycles on the path are scary!

The woods are beautiful!

We did indeed reach our destination!  Unfortunately, the bricked-up tunnel is covered with foliage.

The return stretch was downhill.  Glad for fully-operational brakes.

Home again!!  Here are the stats from John's bicycle gadget:  6.448 km traveled; average speed 10.4 km/h; 37 min. 12 sec.

Mother's Day!

After church while we were eating lunch, Frau Kirn brought over flowers that had been delivered that morning.  Steffi and Dietmar had sent a very unique heart-shaped arrangement! Love the mix of daisies and roses and the colors; plus the little orange "accents" are very cute.

The flowers and calls from kids made my day!  Otherwise, after church we were chauffeuring Zach around to all his obligations - school theater practice (he's Shakespeare's Romeo) from 11:30 a.m. til 1:30 p.m., then getting him to the meeting place for the ride to Gmünd to play in the orchestra for the musical "Peter Pan".  (Jon Thomas was the organizer and conductor for the orchestra.)  The final performance was at 3:00 p.m., but Zach didn't get home til around 9:30 p.m.  The cast and orchestra were "chillin'" afterwards, and yet another group of people for Zach to say "good-bye".

While Zach was relaxing and chilling with his friends, I decided to move ahead on his hippie outfit.  This Monday was "hippie" day for the seniors.  (Tomorrow is to dress up in a way representing one of his majors - Zach's choosing the black/black of musicians - and on Wednesday he's wearing a suit, but I'm not sure of the theme for that day.)

True to a mother's role, I rummaged around and found this "heirloom" T-shirt left (long, long ago) by one of his siblings.  I slit the side seams on a pair of old, threadbare Banana jeans (a brand that was non-existent to the counter culture), and sewed in an insert of stars and stripes.

Thanks to Helen and Freya for the idea of a headband!  Originally, he had on flip-flops, but because of the cold, he packed those in his school bag to put on at school, and added the jacket for warmth.
